Mohamed Morsi, the head of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, is leading by a million votes in the presidential runoff after 95 percent of the ballots were counted, his election campaign headquarters said on Monday.

According to the headquarters, some 12.4 million people voted for Morsi (52 percent), while his only rival Ahmed Shafiq, ex-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, gathered only 11.4 million votes (48 percent).

A spokesman for Shafiq’s election campaign headquarters said they would not confirm the data provided by the rival candidate’s staff and they would wait for the final official results, which are expected to be announced on June 21.

The country's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) is due to hand over to the new president on July 1.
