Clashes between leftists and neo-Nazis in Hamburg on Saturday have inflicted damage of 1.5 million euros, the German Police Federation (GdP) reported on Sunday.
About a thousand neo-Nazis went out for a march against multiculturalism and tolerance in Hamburg on Saturday while a demonstration against the neo-Nazi march gathered about ten times more people.
In their attempt to block the Neo-Nazi march, left radicals erected barricades made of waste bins and then set them on fire. The confrontation between the neo-Nazis and left radicals turned into riots in the streets of the city.
The police who arrived at the scene were pelted with stones and bottles and had to use waterjets to disperse the crowd.
A total of 38 policemen were hurt in the riots and ten police vehicles were burnt down while 700 participants in the clashes were arrested.
