Mitt Romney has secured the Republican nomination to run against Barack Obama in November's U.S. presidential election, following a resounding victory in the Texas primary, the Washington Post reported.
The former Massachusetts governor won 88 votes in the state, bringing his total tally past the 1,144 delegates needed to confirm his selection. The race has been effectively over for several weeks as his rivals pulled out.
Romney - the first Mormon to win a major party's nomination - said he was "humbled."
"I am honored that Americans across the country have given their support to my candidacy and I am humbled to have won enough delegates to become the Republican Party's 2012 presidential nominee," Romney said in statement.
He is due to be formally nominated at the party convention in late August.
