A strong earthquake 6.0 magnitude struck northern Italy on Sunday morning leaving at least six people dead and 50 injured, more than 3,000 people were displaced.

A strong earthquake 6.0 magnitude struck northern Italy on Sunday morning leaving at least six people dead and 50 injured, more than 3,000 people were displaced.

The quake 4.1 magnitude struck at 1.15 am Sunday local time with the epicenter 4 kilometers outside Camposanto, northwest of Bologna, center of the Emilia-Romagna region.

The second quake 6.0 magnitude struck at 4.04 am. The struck was felt not only in Emilia-Romagna but also in the central region of Tuscany and northern Veneto, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In total there were 17 aftershocks.

At present 6 people are reported dead, four of them are local factory workers. Two women, a 37-year old German citizen who was on business trip in Italy and a 106-year-old woman died of a heart attack during an evacuation.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti took the decision to return home from the NATO summit in Chicago.

The last earthquake 6.3 magnitude struck L'Aquila in April 2009 which killed nearly 300 people.
