Russia is concerned over tribute to Wehrmacht soldiers in The Netherlands ahead of VE Day, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Friday.

The event that involved the laying of flowers at the graves of Nazi soldiers was timed to coincide with the commemoration of World War Two victims and the liberation of The Netherlands from the Nazi occupation, which were held on May 4 and 5, Lukashevich said.

“The existence of such sentiments in a country located in the heart of Europe and which suffered from Nazi occupation during World War II cannot but arouse serious concern,” he said.

Moscow regards any attempts to whitewash or glorify Nazism unacceptable, he stressed.

Russia is against the attempts by certain political forces “to rewrite WWII history and revise the well known decisions by the Nuremberg Tribunal,” Lukashevich said.
