The UN Security Council has strongly condemned Monday’s attack on the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that left at least 11 Pakistani soldiers seriously wounded, the UN said on its website.

The attack saw seven peacekeepers sustaining bullet wounds and a few others hit with stones when around 1,000 people surrounded their base in the Bunyiakiri area of South Kivu province, the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (Monusco) said.

Ambassador Agshin Mehdiyev of Azerbaijan, holding the rotating Security Council presidency for May, said in a statement that the Council’s members condemned the attack “in the strongest terms.”

“They encouraged the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to ensure that the perpetrators of the attacks are brought to justice swiftly,” Mehdiyev said.

The UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC was established in 1999. With some 19,000 uniformed personnel currently on the ground, it has overseen the country’s emergence from years of civil war and factional chaos, culminating in 2006 with the first democratic elections in over four decades. Fighting, however, has persisted sporadically in the east, where most UN forces are deployed.
