At least three Russian tourists were missing on Saturday and a total of 13 people dead after floods triggered by landslides swept the Rapti river in the popular Annapurna trekking region in the west of the Nepal, The Himalayan Times reported.

At least 13 people, including three foreigners, were confirmed dead in the flood in Pokhara and adjoining villages in Kaski, Nepal Army spokesman Ramindra Chhetri told a local television channel on Saturday afternoon.

Chhetri did not say if the three dead foreigners were the missing Russians, and the names of the dead were not released.

Around 50 people are also missing and three have been rescued, Nepalnews.com reported, adding the death toll was very likely to rise as rescuers searched the remote mountain area.

The floods tore through villages on the banks of the Seti, a main water source for the people in the region and popular rafting destination for tourists.

The floods have now reached the outskirts of the city of Pokhara, Nepal’s second largest city.

Four trucks, a tractor and a bus were also swept away, Nepalnews said.

The Nepal Army and Police are taking part in rescue efforts in the area. The local administration in the Kaski area has issued an alert asking people to move away from the river area.

Nepal often suffers floods due to intense rain in the monsoon season from May to September.
