U.S. and European secret services are on alert with the anniversary of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s death fearing that U.S.-bound aircraft could be blown up by terrorists with bombs hidden inside their bodies, ABC News reported.

Security measures were stepped up at airports in Europe and the Middle East with the focus on U.S.-bound aircraft.

According to medical experts, there is enough room in the stomach cavity of a human body, where explosive devices could be surgically implanted.

“The surgeon would open the abdominal cavity and literally implant the explosive device in amongst the internal organs,” ABC News cited Dr. Mark Melrose, a New York emergency medicine specialist, as saying.

A year ago President Barack Obama told the world about the secret raid of U.S. commandos on bin Laden’s hideout in the northwestern town of Abbottabad on May 2, 2011.

Bin Laden, who was behind the 9/11 attacks against the United States, was killed in the raid and his compound was demolished in February.
