At least 103 people were killed and over 100 went missing after an overcrowded ferry carrying 350 passengers capsized in the Brahmaputra river in northeast India on Monday, the Times of India reported.

The double-decked ferry was reportedly crossing the fast-flowing Brahmaputra river in Assam state when it was caught by a severe storm, split in two and sunk, the daily said, citing a local official, Kumud Chandra Kalita.

"The storm has resulted in the tragedies and we are taking all measures," Kalita told the paper.

The death toll now stands at 103 with over 100 missing, the paper said.

National Disaster Relief Force and police are involved into the ongoing rescue operation.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who said he was "shocked and grieved to know about the loss of lives," has pledged assistance to the relatives of the victims.
