Kazakhstan has said it will review rules on the use of its national symbols after a spoof anthem from the comedy film Borat was played at a medal ceremony in Kuwait.

A Kazakh official has said the country will review rules on the use of its national symbols after a spoof anthem from the comedy film Borat was played at a medal ceremony in Kuwait.

"Regulations will be brought in regarding the use of state symbols at sporting events," Ilsiyar Kanagatov, the deputy head of Kazakhstan's state sports agency, told reporters on Wednesday.

Kanagatov also said all Kazakh national teams will be required to learn the lyrics of the national anthem and receive instructions as to how to behave during its broadcast at international competitions.

The joke song, which praises the former Soviet republic for its superior potassium exports and having the "cleanest prositutes in the region," was played at the Arab Shooting Championships in Kuwait last week as Kazakhstan's Maria Dmitrienko received her gold medal.

Organizers apologised for the blunder and the ceremony was later rerun.

Kazakhstan called the incided "a scandal" and filed a complaint.

The song was produced by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen for his 2006 film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, which angered many Kazakhs by portraying the country as backward and racist.

The film was banned in the oil-rich country, and Cohen threatened with legal action.
