Egypt’s Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF)on Friday confirmed its commitment to stage presidential elections and hold a constitutional referendum in the wake of doubts expressed by the country's Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt’s Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF)on Friday confirmed its commitment to stage presidential elections and hold a constitutional referendum in the wake of doubts expressed by the country's Muslim Brotherhood.

“There is no substance behind speculations and doubts over the Council’s firm commitment to hold presidential elections and a constitutional referendum,” SCAF said in a statement read out by Egyptian state television on Sunday.

The statement also said that SCAF "spared no effort in protecting the revolution, adopting its demands and maintained its process and the state stability in difficult times".

The council keeps a close eye on the situation in the country, the statement added.

The military took over more than a year ago after a popular uprising ended President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule.

The Muslim Brotherhood, whose Freedom and Justice Party won a crushing victory in parliamentary elections, on Saturday issued a statement accusing the government of stalling reforms. It described Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri's cabinet as a failure and criticized the army for continuing to support it.
