The Polish Supreme Audit Office (NIK) has found numerous violations in the organization of flights for top officials in the Polish Armed Forces between 2005 and 2010, Gazeta Wyborcza reported on Thursday.

Audit experts found out that the Smolensk-bound April 10 flight that killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski and over 90 top officials in 2010 was organized with numerous safety violations.

Russian and Polish diplomats discussed the Smolensk visit only over the telephone and the flight was not authorized since none of the passengers had diplomatic permits for the visit, stated the paper, quoting the NIK report.

The auditors also revealed that the Polish 36th special air transport regiment, responsible for handling flights of top Polish officials, lacked experienced staff.

The experts also confirmed the information published in the Kaczynski crash report that the 36th regiment’s pilots had not used simulators for Tupolev airplanes.

“There was an outdated education system in the regiment until 2010 that was used back in 70s,” Gazeta Wyborcza cited the NIK report.

All ninety-six people on board the April 10 flight to Smolensk for the 70th anniversary of the WWII Katyn massacre perished when the plane crashed in poor weather conditions.
