The UN Security Council has strongly condemned Friday’s terrorist attack in the Syrian capital of Damascus that left dozens dead and scores wounded

The UN Security Council has strongly condemned Friday’s terrorist attack in the Syrian capital of Damascus that left dozens dead and scores wounded, Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

At least 26 people were killed and 63 wounded after a bomb, apparently targeting police, went off at a busy crossroads in the Midan district in central Damascus shortly before the noon prayer.

“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that occurred in Damascus, Syria, on Jan. 6, 2012, causing scores of deaths and injuries,” the agency quoted a UN Security Council statement as saying.

The statement also expressed condolences to families and relatives of the victims, as well as to all people in Syria, and lashed out at all forms and manifestations of terrorism saying that “any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.”

This was the second large-scale terrorist attack to hit Damascus in the past two weeks.

On December 24, a total of 54 people were killed and more than 160 were injured after female suicide bombers detonated two cars laden with explosives in central Damascus.
