The new president of Transdnestr, Yevgeny Shevchuk, said in his New Year’s address to the nation that he would improve life in the Moldovan breakaway republic.

Former Transdnestr parliamentary speaker Shevchuk won the presidential polls in the runoff election on December 25, gaining 73.88 percent of the vote.

“I do not want to speak of plans and promise what has not been achieved yet. But I know for sure that the country’s new leadership will make all efforts to improve the situation in the country,” Shevchuk said in the televised address.

He said the republic’s economic condition needs to be changed.

“We need to remember this and not forget that much work lies ahead of us, which can only be fulfilled when we are all together,” the new president said.

The Russian-speaking region gained de facto independence from Moldova in 1992. A joint peacekeeping force of Russian, Moldovan and Transdnestr contingents has been deployed in the area.

Transdnestr is seeking full independence, but Moldova says it is only prepared to allow autonomy.
