Israel completed the deal to exchange Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit for more than 1,000 Palestinians by releasing the remaining 550 prisoners, the Israeli Defense Force said in a statement.

The announcement came shortly after midnight Moscow time on Monday.

In mid-October, Israel agreed to release 1,027 Palestinians kept in Israeli prisons in exchange for Shalit, who was captive for over five years. The first group of 477 prisoners was released on October 18, including 287 sentenced for life. The remaining 550 were to be freed in two months.

Israeli authorities had to change the location of prisoner swap for 505 prisoners released from the Ofer Prison after violent clashes between Israelis and Palestinians erupted on Sunday at the initial site, the Beitunia border crossing southwest of Ramallah.

Other prisoners were released according to the previous agreements: 41 prisoners were taken to the Gaza Strip, two crossed into Jordan and two more were taken to East Jerusalem.
