Saadi Gaddafi, a son of the former late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi killed on October 20, will remain in Niger until the United Nations lifts a ban on his freedom of movement, local media reported on Wednesday, citing the Nigerian foreign minister.

“We are obliged to respect this resolution. He [Saadi Gaddafi] is here, he cannot travel ... Until that resolution is revised, he will stay in Niger,” Foreign Minister Bazoum Mohamed told state television on Tuesday evening.

Saadi, 38, fled Libya for Niger in mid-September together with other members of the Gaddafi family after rebel forces established control over most of the country in August, forcing the Libyan leader to go on the run. He has been granted asylum on humanitarian grounds in Niger. Interpol has issued an arrest warrant for Saadi Gaddafi at the request of Libya's transitional authorities.

Libyan authorities called Niger on Monday to revise its “unjustified position” because such statements, according to Tripoli, “do not help build relations [between the two countries] based on mutual respect.”

Niger has recognized the National Transitional Council as Libya's interim authority. In mid-September, the United Nations gave the Council a seat at the General Assembly that had been occupied by representatives of the Gaddafi government for the past 42 years.

On September 9, Interpol put the ousted Libyan leader and his other son, Seif al-Islam, as well as his intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi, on a wanted list.
