The Syrian government approved on Wednesday a plan backed by the Arab League for a peaceful settlement of the ongoing conflict in Syria, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said.

"We are happy to have reached this agreement and we will be even happier if it is implemented immediately," al-Thani said, adding that Syria had accepted calls to end the violence, withdraw the military from cities, release opposition activists and allow the Arab League to monitor the situation.

Anti-government protests began in Syria seven months ago. The UN says 3,000 people have died in the unrest, while the government claims a death toll of about 1,500, including 1,100 law enforcement personnel.
