Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Friday he believed it was unseemly for a president to use trendy devices like the iPad.

“I can carry those iPads with me, dabbing at them with my finger, but this is not worthy of a president,” he told Russian journalists at a major news conference in Minsk.

“The presidency is a conservative position,” he went on. “When a president is at pains to be at the forefront, this is a cause for sarcasm among the public,” he said.

Lukashenko’s Russian counterpart, President Dmitry Medvedev, is known for styling himself as a technologically savvy leader who has an iPad and a Twitter account.

The internet, Lukashenko said, plays an important role in modern society, but it has “killed the book.”

“I cannot forgive the internet for this,” he said.
