France together with Libya’s Transitional National Council (TNC) and other allies are working to prevent the spread of weapons from Libya to other countries in the region, a spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
“This is a serious problem affecting regional security. That is why we have turned to the TNC, to our partners and allies as well as to the countries in the region in order to jointly study and eliminate this threat,” Bernard Valero said at a news conference.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe earlier said that the main task for the new Libyan authorities is to disarm military brigades and confiscate all weapons.
Massive demonstrations against longtime leader Gaddafi broke out in Libya in mid-February. The stand-off between the oppositionists and the ruling authorities turned into an armed conflict.
A NATO-led military operation began on March 19 following a UN resolution on "targeted measures" to protect civilians.
