At least three people were killed and 26 injured on Tuesday when a car driven by a suicide bomber exploded in front of a local police chief's office in Lashkar Gah, the main city in Helmand province, a local official said.

The attacker rammed his car into a police truck parked a bakery where police officers regularly buy bread.

"One of those killed was a child and 10 police were among the wounded," said Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the governor of Helmand province.

The Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The security situation in the city has deteriorated significantly since Lashkar Gah was chosen as one of the first six areas to start a gradual transition of responsibility for security from NATO-led troops to their Afghan counterparts two months ago.

Over 100 people have been killed or wounded in four terrorist attacks in Lashkar Gah since the decision was made.
