The United States is in danger of collapsing because of mismanagement, one of America’s former leading diplomats has said.

Brent Scowcroft, a former U.S. national security adviser and retired general, told RIA Novosti that America’s democratic system was “in danger of collapsing through paralysis” because it was increasingly hard for the country’s legislators to cooperate.

“The American system works well because of compromise and because the Constitution was not written to have efficient government, but to protect the people from government trying to take away their power,” Scowcroft said.

“It makes it easy to keep something from happening in our system. The way to make things happen is for different groups to cooperate. When they do not, like recently, the system doesn’t work.”

Scowcroft, who was National Security Adviser to George Bush, Sr., said last month’s legislation to increase the U.S. debt ceiling to allow more borrowing and cut $1 trillion from the U.S. budget was “not a very good arrangement… put together in the last moment.”

The U.S. debt crisis - the country owes more than $14 trillion in debt - is the kind of pressure that is “always a problem for democratic systems,” he said.

“We are all struggling for a form of government which combines both efficiency and freedom from arbitrariness against its people,” he said.
