The Libyan government is forging an alliance with radical Islamist elements among the Libyan rebels to drive out their more liberal-minded confederates, The New York Times quoted Muammar Gaddafi's son as saying.

"The liberals will escape or be killed," Seif al-Islam-Gaddafi said. "We will do it together."

"Libya will look like Saudi Arabia, Iran. So what?" he added.

Leading Islamist Ali Sallabi acknowledged he had spoken to Seif Gaddafi, but dismissed any suggestion of an alliance. He said the Libyan Islamists supported rebel leaders' calls for a pluralistic democracy without the Gaddafis.

Muammar Gaddafi has claimed in the past that al-Qaeda is involved in the uprising against him.

Libya has been rocked by fighting between pro- and anti-government forces since mid-February. An international military operation "to protect civilians" began on March 19 following a UN resolution and has been extended until September.
