At least seven people died in a bomb attack at government headquarters in the Norwegian capital of Oslo on Friday, police said.

There were also "a lot of injuries" Assistant Chief Constable Egil Vrekke said. Police also said there were "more people dead" inside the buildings.

The blast is believed to have damaged the offices of Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and a number of other official buildings. The authorities have said Stoltenberg is unharmed.

State media footage shows smoke coming from windows and debris on the street - also a major business area. The area has been closed off by police.

ABC News said, quoting U.S. government sources in Oslo, that the blast was the result of a massive vehicle bomb.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, the first major terrorist act in Norway.

There are unconfirmed reports of other unexploded devices and police are urging people to leave central Oslo.
