U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has congratulated the people of Georgia on National Independence Day and reiterated the White House's support for Georgian territorial integrity.

"The United States and Georgia have built a vibrant partnership based on shared values and mutual interests. We are committed to Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty and we are helping Georgia strengthen democratic institutions," Clinton said.

"On this 20th anniversary of Georgia's independence from the Soviet Union, we celebrate the bonds between our countries and people, and reaffirm our commitment to broadening and deepening this relationship. I wish all Georgians around the world a peaceful and prosperous year," she added.

National celebrations in Georgia were marred in the early Thursday morning after special task police forces clashed with a crowd of protesters in downtown of capital Tbilisi.

Police used water cannons, rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse protesters, who had been calling for President Mikheil Saakashvili to step down since last week. There were reports of casualties among protesters and policemen following the clash.
