The Libyan authorities said on Friday that four foreign journalists who went missing on Monday are being held by the Libyan military and will be released soon, the Spanish TVE1 channel said.

The channel said a car carrying a Spanish press photographer, a South African and two U.S. journalists was stopped by Libyan soldiers on a highway linking the eastern rebel-controlled town of Ajdabiya to the nearby Mediterranean port of Marsa-el-Brega on Monday.

The car was set on fire and the journalists taken in an unknown direction.

The incident was witnessed by a security guard accompanying a New York Times journalist on an assignment, who was driving his car on the same highway. The information about the missing journalists was later confirmed by Reporters Without Borders.

Rebels in Libya have been fighting forces loyal to President Muammar Gaddafi since mid-February. A NATO-led operation is enforcing a no-fly zone over the country in an attempt to prevent Gaddafi loyalists from attacking civilians.
