Moscow is currently persuading the United States to sign an agreement to scrap visas for visits lasting under 90 days, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Thursday.

Moscow is currently persuading the United States to sign an agreement to scrap visas for visits lasting under 90 days, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Thursday.

"We want an agreement scrapping visas... for travel lasting up to 90 days to be signed with the United States," Ryabkov said.

Moscow has long been striving for gradual simplification of the visa regime between Russia and the United States.

"[Russian] President Dmitry Medvedev initially came up with the idea to switch over to a visa-free regime," Ryabkov said. In early March, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told U.S. Vice President Joe Biden that Russia and the United States would take an "historic step" by abolishing visas.

"We are currently discussing the idea with the United States, but the talks are not as intensive as we would like," Ryabkov said.

He emphasized that easier rules to receive multi-entry visas are also on the table, adding that the validity of such visas may be extended to three years.
