Bahraini police launched an attack on pro-democracy protesters holding a rally in the country's capital of Manama, world media reported on Wednesday.

Police fired tear gas at demonstrators, who are demanding political reforms following recent revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt and the ongoing bloodshed in Libya, in order to suppress the protesters.

Protesters are calling for the establishment of a constitutional monarchy, the release of political prisoners and more rights for women.

On Tuesday, Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa declared a three-month state of emergency to suppress a Shi'ite uprising that spread throughout the capital and surrounding villages, Al Jazeera reported.

On Monday, Saudi Arabian troops entered Bahrain to help government powers disperse the crowd. It is yet unknown if Saudi troops were involved in Wednesday's police assault on demonstrators.
