Italy is ready to contribute to any action taken against Libya and back any decisions by the UN, EU or NATO, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano said on Wednesday.

Italy's Supreme Defense Council considered the situation in Libya at an emergency meeting chaired by Napolitano and attended by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the defense and foreign ministers, and the military chief of staff.

"Italy is ready to give its active contribution to greater definition and consequent activation of any decisions now being studied by the United Nations, the European Union and the Atlantic Alliance," the council said in a statement.

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on February 26 on "targeted measures" against the current Libyan government. The sanctions include a total arms embargo, travel bans and freezing of accounts held by the country's leadership.

A UN resolution on the imposition of a no-fly zone over Libyan airspace is to be debated by NATO defense ministers later this week. Russia has said it is against all military intervention.

Thousands of people have been killed since the first protesters began demanding the end of Muammaer Gaddafi's 41-year rule in mid-February.
