There are no Belarusian mercenaries fighting in Libya and a plane laden with Muammar Gaddafi's gold has not landed in Minsk, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

There are no Belarusian mercenaries fighting in Libya and a plane laden with Muammar Gaddafi's gold has not landed in Minsk, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

"In the last few days, false allegations about Belarus have begun to appear in foreign media," spokesman Andrei Savinykh said.

"First they invented Belarusian contractors in Libya, then invented the landing in Minsk of a plane from Libya carrying gold and diamonds, and today they organized accusations of mythical violations of UN Security Council sanctions. All these accusations are far from reality," he said.

"In reality, a destructive media attack is being carried out against Belarus," he added.

Violent nationwide protests demanding the end of the 42-year rule of Libyan Gaddafi are currently raging across Libya. Up to 2,000 people have been killed and between 4,000 and 6,000 others wounded in clashes with security forces.

The United Nations Security Council on Sunday adopted a resolution imposing sanctions on Libya's leadership. The sanctions, designed to end violence in the African state, include a total arms embargo, travel bans and the freezing of accounts.
