A Ukrainian-born man has been arrested in New York after a 28-hour rampage in which he killed his stepfather, ex-girlfriend, her mother and a pedestrian.

Maksim Gelman, 23, a naturalized U.S. citizen who lives in Brooklyn, was arrested at the Times Square subway station after stabbing his final victim on a crowded train, manhattan.ny1.com has reported.

The massacre started early on Friday when he stabbed to death his stepfather Aleksander Kuznetsov, 54, after an argument over Gelman using his mother's Lexus.

Gelman later drove the Lexus to the home of his ex-girlfriend, Yelena Bulchenko, where he met her 56-year-old mother, Anna, whom he also stabbed to death. He then waited for Yelena and killed her.

The attacker later stole a car from a driver, whom he stabbed in the chest, and struck a 62-year-old pedestrian, who died in hospital.

The stabbing rampage continued when Gelman knifed another driver and stabbed a 40-year-old man in the head and chest at the Times Square Street station.

Before committing his final act of brutality, Gelman shouted "My girlfriend ruined my life!" nypost.com said.

A police officer investigating the crime said that Gelman made a statement that 'she had to die,' which likely referred to his girlfriend.

Gelman was previously arrested for drugs possession and graffiti, police said.
