Egyptian opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei has been asked by the country's opposition groups to form an interim government, the Democratic Front Party said in a statement.

The former IAEA chief and outspoken critic of President Hosni Mubarak has joined thousands of protesters in Cairo to demand the authoritarian leader step down after 30 years of rule.

Elbaradei, 68, will be in charge of economic and social reforms, release of detainees and lifting emergency rule, the party's statement on almasryalyoum.com said.

Anti-government protests continued for the sixth day on Sunday in Egypt. At least 150 people have been killed and about 4,000 injured in the riots, Al-Jazeera TV channel said.

Mubarak, 82, has rejected calls from protesters to resign and dismissed the country's government, pledging to form a new one and bring in democratic reforms.

ElBaradei called Mubarak's speech 'disappointing' and said he "must go" to stop violence in the country.

"Egypt needs to catch up with the rest of the world. We need to be free, democratic, and a society where people have the right to live in freedom and dignity," he told CNN.
