The authorities in Belarus have banned broadcasts by the Autoradio station over its "calls for extremist activity," the station's head said on Wednesday.

The authorities in Belarus have banned broadcasts by the Autoradio station over its "calls for extremist activity," the station's head said on Wednesday.

"We were issued an order on the termination of our permit to operate a radio frequency spectrum," station chief Yuri Bazan said.

Bazan said that ahead of the country's recent presidential elections the radio station aired campaign slots by Vladimir Neklyayev and Andrei Sannikov, rivals to President Alexander Lukashenko.

He also said the station plans to appeal the decision.

Lukashenko was reelected for a fourth straight term in December 19 polls the opposition claimed were rigged. International monitors said the election was "flawed."

More than 600 people, including opposition leaders, were detained in the Belarusian capital of Minsk during a police crackdown on subsequent protests.
