U.S. President Barack Obama has condemned deadly terrorist attacks on Egypt and Nigeria and expressed his readiness to provide help to those affected by the blasts.

At least 21 people were killed in a blast that occurred near a crowded Coptic Christian church in Alexandria a half hour into the New Year early on Saturday. The explosion, which also injured at least 97 people, took place as worshippers were leaving the church after a holiday Mass.

On Friday, a blast near a market in the Nigerian capital of Abuja killed at least 30 people.

Obama condemned the "outrageous terrorist bombing attacks" and expressed hope that those responsible for the blasts would be brought to justice.

"The United States extends its deepest condolences to the families of those killed and to the wounded in both of these attacks, and we stand with the Nigerian and Egyptian people at this difficult time," the U.S. president said in a statement.

Representatives of both Christian and Muslim communities were among those injured in the Alexandria blast, but the perpetrators of the attack were "clearly targeting Christian worshipers," he said.

International terrorist group al-Qaeda earlier threatened Egyptian Christians with an attack.

Coptic Christians account for approximately 10% of Egypt's population of 80 million.

The United States is ready to offer "any necessary assistance" to the Egyptian and Nigerian governments over the blasts, he added.
