Russia has called for a diplomatic solution to tensions on the Korean Peninsula, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin said, a week after the North shelled a South Korean island.

Russia has called for a diplomatic solution to tensions on the Korean Peninsula, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin said, a week after the North shelled a South Korean island.

Borodavkin discussed the issue with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg on Monday.

"The Russian side stressed the importance of easing tensions in the region and solving any issues in the relations between the two Korean states through diplomatic means only," a statement from the ministry said.

North Korea's shelling of the South's Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea last Tuesday killed four people and led both sides to the brink of war.

China, the North's longstanding ally, said Pyongyang was behaving like a "spoiled child" and hinted it would favor a reunified Korea, according to U.S. embassy cables released by the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.
