Suspected Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who was extradited from Thailand to the United States on Tuesday, has been taken to a temporary detention center adjacent to New York's Southern District Federal Court.

Bout was taken to the detention center in a large armored vehicle with an escort of four other vehicles. The convoy arrived at 12.30 pm New York time (05.30 GMT).

The Russian citizen's plane landed at the Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, some 100 km north of New York, two hours earlier.

The suspected arms dealer may be brought to court in the next few hours, a law enforcement source told RIA Novosti earlier on Wednesday on condition of anonymity.

Former Russian army officer Bout was arrested in Thailand in March 2008 during a sting operation led by U.S. agents. The United States accuses Bout of conspiring with others to sell millions of dollars' worth of weapons to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), among other illegal arms deals. Bout denies all the charges

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday it would continue to defend the so-called Merchant of Death and called the extradition "illegal."
