The Ukrainian opposition is against the government's plans to extend the working week from 40 to 48 hours, a shadow cabinet member said on Wednesday.

A new labor law pending in the Ukrainian parliament was drafted by the ruling Party of Regions.

The bill's authors have said it sets a 48-hour cap as current legislation sets no limit on working hours at all.

"These amendments undo all the previous gains aimed to protect employees' rights on the legislative level," Serhiy Sobolev, a member of the Yulia Tymoshenko faction, said.

The proposed working hours are in conflict with international and European standards, make employees dependent on their employers and destroy the independent labor movement, he said.

The opposition is preparing counterproposals to the document, Sobolev said.
