Local authorities in southern Kyrgyzstan have taken the situation "under relative control" following ethnic riots that swept through the region in the last two days, Kyrgyz media reported.

Local authorities in southern Kyrgyzstan have taken the situation "under relative control" following ethnic riots that swept through the region in the last two days, Kyrgyz media reported.

Deadly ethnic riots in the country's second-largest city of Osh and another southern city of Jalalabad on Friday and Saturday claimed at least 77 lives and left 1029 injured.

Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbek groups set ablaze cars, crushed the stores and markets as well as the residential houses. The looters have been rampaging through the streets during the days of rioting.

The media cited Osh commandant Baktybek Alymbekov as saying troops and police subdued most of the groups involved in ethnic clashes and took the situation in the city "under relative control."

The official said the calm returned to the streets of Osh with the nightfall, but the humanitarian situation remained complicated as most of the businesses have been closed down and the city started to feel shortages of food and medical supplies.

Interim governor of the Jalalabad region told the media that the conflict had been localized but the situation in the city of Jalalabad remained tense.

"The downtown is empty...Everyone is trying to stay inside. I hope the night will be calm," Bektur Asanov said, adding that police and local volunteers kept order on the streets.

Kyrgyz interim government passed a decree on Saturday declaring a partial mobilization of the civilian reservists and allowed police and the troops to shoot to kill in order to quench the riots and stop marauders.
