The Lithuanian parliament has adopted a resolution supporting Georgia's territorial integrity and calling for the establishment of autonomy in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The Lithuanian parliament has adopted a resolution supporting Georgia's territorial integrity and calling for the establishment of autonomy in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the parliament's press service has said.

A total of 55 members of the 141-seat Seimas supported the resolution, which was initiated by 76 MPs. Nine lawmakers voted against it, and 23 abstained from voting.

The resolution said that Georgia's jurisdiction over South Ossetia and Abkhazia should be restored. The issue could be resolved through the "introduction of autonomy in these regions that would correlate with Georgia's Constitution and be appropriate for local residents."

The Lithuanian parliament declared the recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia's independence by Russia "non-legal."

Russia recognized the two former Georgian republics as independent states in 2008, after a five-day war with Georgia, which attacked South Ossetia in an attempt to bring it back under central control.

Nicaragua, Venezuela and the tiny Pacific island state of Nauru have followed suit.
