The Kyrgyz authorities have appealed to Interpol to detain deposed president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, law enforcement chief Azimbek Beknazarov said on Thursday.

Kyrgyzstan has been wracked by violent protests since a series of demonstrations in early April sparked widespread unrest in which more than 80 people died. An interim government was formed by the opposition.

New Kyrgyz authorities stripped Bakiyev of his presidential immunity and launched criminal proceedings against him.

Bakiyev was forced to flee the country since he and his relatives were blamed for the deaths of dozens people shot by security forces in the April unrest. The ex-president took refuge in Belarus and the Kyrgyz interim government demanded his extradition.

"We called Interpol for assistance in his [Bakiyev's] detention. Interpol will catch him," Beknazarov, who is also a deputy prime minister, said.

Earlier Interpol put on its wanted list several high-ranking Kyrgyz officials from Bakiyev's ousted government.

Meanwhile, a Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Belarusian diplomats will return to the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek when they are provided with security.

Belarusian diplomats left Kyrgyzstan on May 13 following the rise of anti-Belarusian sentiment among members of the Kyrgyz interim government.

"The diplomats will return when there are no threats to their lives, and they are able to perform their professional duties," Andrei Savinykh said.
