Russia's Emergencies Ministry said on Tuesday it is ready to send additional aid to help flood-stricken Poland if Warsaw asks for it

Russia's Emergencies Ministry said on Tuesday it is ready to send additional aid to help flood-stricken Poland if Warsaw asks for it.

"If the Polish side asks Russia for humanitarian aid again and if the Russian government decides on this, we are ready to send additional aid," senior ministry official Nikolai Pakhomov said.

He added that the question of the involvement of Russian rescuers had not yet been raised.

Heavy rains hit Poland late last week, with the country's southern regions the worst affected by the natural disaster. Local rescue teams are evacuating people from flooded areas.

On Monday President Dmitry Medvedev instructed Russia's emergencies minister to send humanitarian aid to Poland in response to a request for assistance.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry said this was the first time Poland had asked for help since a bilateral aid agreement was signed in 1993. Pakhomov said a ministry Il-76 plane would depart on Tuesday with more than 14 tons of aid, including 18 pumps, 34 boats and five diesel generators.

According to police reports, at least 14 people were killed in the floods across the country.

The water level in the Vistula River in the Polish capital has exceeded danger levels by more than 1 meter, but as yet no one has been evacuated.
