Poland's Law and Justice party, led by the twin brother of the late president Lech Kaczynski, has sent a letter to the country's prosecutor general with questions on the presidential plane crash probe.

Poland's Law and Justice party, led by the twin brother of the late president Lech Kaczynski, has sent a letter to the country's prosecutor general with questions on the presidential plane crash probe.

A Soviet-made Tu-154 aircraft crashed near the western Russian city of Smolensk when it attempted to land in thick fog, killing all 96 people on board, including President Kaczynski and other top state officials.

"We would like to know how the circumstances surrounding the crash are being investigated, what happens to testimonies of witnesses and other materials in the case," Law and Justice party lawmaker Jaroslaw Zielinski said.

Several senior lawmakers, including the leader of the Law and Justice faction in the Polish parliament, Grazyna Gesicka, were among those killed in the crash.

Zielinski said the letter contained nine questions, such as when did Polish prosecutors first arrived at the crash site, who took part in investigation near Smolensk and what measures did they undertook, how many eyewitnesses gave their testimonies and what materials did Polish officials received from Russia.

In addition, the party wants to know the names of Polish prosecutors who have access to information from flight data recorders and why the black boxes have not yet been transferred to Poland.

The letter also says that the crash site is not being properly guarded, and asks the prosecutors to launch a separate investigation into the issue.

The Law and Justice party leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, earlier said he felt grateful to Russians for their sympathies expressed after the tragic death of his twin brother.

Russian and Polish investigators and experts are jointly investigating the causes of the deadly crash, while Polish military prosecutors are conducting their own investigation.

Polish Attorney General Krzysztof Parulski said last month that the Polish side was "impressed by how well the investigation was organized by Russian specialists." He also said that Russia's support was beyond the limits of the existing Convention on mutual legal assistance.
