The Kyrgyz authorities asked Latvian prosecutors to arrest the younger son of ousted Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Maxim, who is allegedly hiding in the Baltic state, a spokesman for the Latvian Prosecutor General's Office said.

He said Latvia has urgently requested additional information from Kyrgyzstan, since a package of documents requiring the arrest of Maxim Bakiyev is "contradictory and unclear."

Kyrgyz Prosecutor's General's Office suspects Maxim Bakiyev of embezzling millions of dollars of a loan from Russia. According to prosecutors Bakiyev had placed $35 million of a $300 million loan from Russia into his private bank accounts while he was the chairman of the board of directors at the Kyrgyz Development Fund.

The Kyrgyz opposition took power in the former Soviet republic in early April after anti-government protests in several cities turned violent, particularly in the capital, Bishkek.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev fled to neighboring Kazakhstan on April 15 and then to the Belarusian capital of Minsk on April 20.
