This year’s St. George ribbon campaign, dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, has started in Buenos Aires.

This year’s St. George ribbon campaign, dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, has started in Buenos Aires.

The activists from the Nasha Rus association and its Slavyanka youth movement have distributed more than 500 commemorative ribbons to the students and compatriots at the prestigious Belgrano university during the International Night annual holiday.

The Russian photo stand, Great Victory, which showed pictures from the RIA Novosti archives, was named one of the best among others, represented by the young people from different countries.

“We will surely hold a few more such campaigns among Argentineans before Victory Day because they are interested in this,” said Kira Protzenko, a member of the Slavyanka movement.

The Russian students told their international audience about the historic battle of the Soviet people against fascism and the role in it of around 800 Argentinean pilots, who were part of the anti-Nazi coalition.

Argentina is home to more than 500,000 Slavs, mostly from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

The campaign, which was initiated by RIA Novosti and the Student Community youth organization, commemorates the heroes of World War II’s Eastern Front and involves hundreds of partners in Russia and abroad.

More than 55 million orange and black ribbons have been distributed across the globe since the campaign was first held in 2005. Ahead of Victory Day, people in many countries decorate their cars, clothes and everything else with the ribbons as an expression of their respect for those who died during the war.

Orange and black are the traditional colors of Soviet and Russian awards for achievements in combat. The black and orange stripes symbolize smoke and fire.
