UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon expressed the international organization's readiness to work with the new Kyrgyz leadership, the General Secretary's spokesman has said.

At least 80 people were killed and more than 1,500 injured in the current political standoff in the ex-Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, which saw the opposition take power and forced President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to flee the capital to the south of the country an later to neighboring Kazakhstan.

"Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomes the fact that the Provisional Government and Mr. Kurmanbek Bakiev reached a solution based on the Constitution of the country that enabled the departure abroad of the deposed President from the South of Kyrgyzstan," Martin Nesirky said in a statement posted on the UN website on Thursday.

"He believes that this is an important step toward the peaceful, stable, prosperous and democratic development of the country and its good governance. The UN together with its international and regional partners is ready to work with the authorities in order to contribute in these areas for the benefit of the people of Kyrgyzstan," the statement said.

The provisional government of Kyrgyzstan, which came to power during last week's riots, was boosted on Wednesday with offers of support from Russia and the United States.

The new Kyrgyz authorities have vowed not to allow further bloodshed or a civil war to develop in the country.
