The participants of the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, D.C. adopted on Tuesday a communique, calling on the international community to make joint efforts to ensure nuclear security.

The April 12-13 summit involved 47 nations. The communique said the nations "welcome and join President Obama's call to secure all vulnerable nuclear material in four years, as we work together to enhance nuclear security."

The document reaffirmed the responsibility of nations in protecting their nuclear materials, urged all countries to cooperate while providing assistance to each other, and noted that highly-enriched uranium, as well as separated plutonium, requires special precautionary measures.

It said the countries "agree to promote measures to secure, account for, and consolidate nuclear materials as appropriate."

The summit participants also encouraged conversion of reactors to low-enriched uranium, urged all states to implement nuclear security commitments and develop nuclear security instruments, and reaffirmed the important role of the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The nations also agreed to swap information to prevent illegal nuclear material trafficking, and supported "the implementation of strong nuclear security practices that will not infringe upon the rights of states to develop and utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes."
