Of that amount, some $5.3 billion will be provided as an immediate aid, within the next 18 months. The sum is well above $3.9 billion, which were initially sought for that period.
"Today, the international community has come together, dramatically, in solidarity with Haiti and its people... Today, the United Nations are united for Haiti," the UN News Centre quoted Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as saying.
He urged immediate aid to the impoverished Caribbean nation, which was hit by a devastating earthquake on January 12. The quake and its aftershocks killed over 220,000 people in and around the capital Port-au-Prince, leaving most of the country in shambles.
"The rainy season is fast approaching. Some camps for displaced persons are at risk of flooding. Heath and sanitation issues are growing more serious,"
Haitian president Rene Preval thanked the international community on behalf of his compatriots.
"The international community has done their part," he said. "Now it is up to the Haitian people to do theirs."
Russia's envoy to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, said Russia will donate $8 million to help rebuild Haiti, bringing the total sum of the Russian aid to $13 million.
"The total amount of Russian aid, already provided as part of the relief operation in Haiti, stood at some $5 million. Russia is ready to further contribute to Haitian recovery," he said.
He said that Russia saw food aid, water, sanitation, healthcare, housing and support for children as top priorities.
"The Russian government has resolved to allocate $8 million for these purposes via channels of various international organizations, mainly the UN," he said.
