Iran on Friday launched its most powerful warship in a ceremony attended by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The 94-meter-long Jamaran destroyer, possibly Iran's most advanced warship, will be assigned to patrol the Persian Gulf.

Khamenei hailed the Jamaran as a major technological breakthrough, taking advantage of the occasion to reiterate that his nation's nuclear program was not aimed at making weapons but at bolstering the spirit of the Islamic world.

"We only seek to awaken the spirit of dignity in the whole of the Muslim community," Khamenei said.

He argued it was the United States, not Iran, that was stirring up trouble in the Middle East.

"U.S. officials are angry and disappointed with the Iranian nation," he said in comments posted in English on his website, Khamenei.ir. "Their meaningless and obsolete remarks about the alleged development of atomic weapons in Iran show well the enemies of the nation are even incapable of fabricating fresh propagandistic phrases."

Iran is reportedly building another destroyer, to be deployed in the Caspian Sea, which Iran shares with Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
