At least one person was killed and another one was injured when a building collapsed at an abandoned radar site in central Kazakhstan.

At least one person was killed and another one was injured when a building collapsed at an abandoned radar site in central Kazakhstan, local emergencies ministry said Saturday.

The building at the former Soviet Daryal-U (Pechora) radar site near Balkhash, which has never been completed due to the lack of funds and has been abandoned since the 1990s, collapsed on Friday after a group of men attempted to dismantle some of its parts.

"A 40-year-old man was killed and another man was hospitalized with serious injuries as a result of the incident," the ministry said in a statement.

Three more people are feared to be buried under the rubble.

The abandoned site has been a target of human scavengers for many years, although it is known to have been polluted by poisonous chemicals and radioactive materials.

The Kazakh environmental protection authorities have recently announced plans to declare the abandoned site an ecological disaster area.
