China has said it is against all arms sales to Taiwan, following an announcement by the U.S. that it is considering new deliveries to the Taiwanese military.

China has said it is against all arms sales to Taiwan, following an announcement by the U.S. that it is considering new deliveries to the Taiwanese military.

China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory, but the island has de facto relations with many countries, including the United States.

"We are firmly opposed to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, our position on this remains unchanged," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Jiang Yu told reporters.

The U.S. government said earlier this week that the President Barack Obama administration may sell military hardware to Taiwan. The previous U.S. administration sold arms to Taiwan, including helicopters and destroyers.

Taiwanese deputy national security advisor Ho Szu-yin is in Washington this week, and is believed to be holding talks on the issue.

China has said it reserves the right to take control of the self-ruled island by force if it formally declares independence. Arms sales are seen as a threat to China's claim on Taiwan.
