UNITED NATIONS, September 22 (RIA Novosti) - The foreign ministers of the six international powers negotiating with Iran over its nuclear program will meet on October 1 in Geneva, the EU foreign policy chief said Tuesday.

The foreign ministers of the so-called Iran Six - Russia, the United States, China, Britain, France and Germany - are due to meet at the United Nations on Wednesday, although nothing substantive is expected from their discussions ahead of the meeting in Geneva, which could involve Iranian representatives.

Javier Solana told journalists that he did not expect Russia or China to speak against the introduction of economic sanctions against Tehran should the Islamic Republic fail to give up its uranium enrichment program.

Iran has been under pressure to halt uranium enrichment, which can be used both for electricity generation and weapons production. Tehran has repeatedly rejected the demand, insisting it is pursuing a purely civilian program.

Western powers seek harsher sanctions against the Islamic Republic if it does not agree to halt uranium enrichment. Russia and China, however, insist on diplomatic steps.
